Entrevista para a Rádio Ego FM, na Alemanha

Hozier se apresentou no festival Superbloom, em Munique, na Alemanha, no dia 31 de agosto de 2025. A Rádio Ego FM aproveitou para entrevistá-lo. Confira a transcrição abaixo:

E: Estou muito feliz em falar com ele hoje. Ele toca com frequência na nossa playlist, no nosso programa de música. Além disso, seu último álbum foi o nosso “álbum da semana” na Ego FM. Muito bom ter você no programa hoje, Hozier, oi!


H: Oi, tudo bem?


E: Estou bem. E você? Como você tem estado? Quero dizer, tem sido um verão bem agitado para você, certo?


H: Sim, está corrido. Tenho viajado bastante este ano e nos últimos dois anos, meio que em turnê e promovendo o álbum. Muito obrigado por todo o apoio e por torná-lo álbum da semana.


Nós realmente amamos o álbum. Você também tocou em muitos festivais. Acho que você tocou nos EUA, no Reading e Leeds... Hoje você tem um grande show no Superbloom Festival em Munique. Você se lembra da sua última vez em Munique?


H: Estávamos justamente tentando pensar nisso no caminho, tentando lembrar da última vez. Foi há cerca de um ano e meio, mas não consigo lembrar exatamente quando foi a última vez que estive em Munique.


E: Mas todas as vezes foram ótimas, certo?


H: É ótimo todas as vezes, sim. Eu amo a Baviera. Adoro vir para cá. Eu vinha para cá muito jovem, tinha uns 16 anos ou algo assim, antes de começar a lançar música, e desde então tenho muito carinho pelo lugar. Então é bom estar de volta e aproveitar um pouco das paisagens locais, da comida, da bebida e tudo mais.


E: Que bom ter você de volta. Preciso perguntar: você tomou café aqui no camarim? Como você toma seu café?


H: Tomei café hoje, mas estaria mentindo se dissesse que foi café preto. Eu escolhi o conforto, escolhi a paz hoje. De estômago vazio… coloquei leite, mas sim, tomei café hoje.


E: Tudo bem. Mas é claro que eu estava me referindo à sua música “Too Sweet”. Vamos falar sobre ela.


H: Haha, sem problemas.


E: Também já fazem 10 anos desde o seu álbum de estreia. Ouvimos ele desde então aqui na Ego FM e eu, pessoalmente, sou uma grande fã da sua música. Você percorreu um longo caminho como artista. Acho que deveria estar muito orgulhoso de si mesmo. Como você acha que a indústria da música mudou nesse tempo todo?


H: Meu Deus, a indústria da música mudou muito. Eu costumo contar isso às pessoas: quando tocamos pela primeira vez no South by Southwest, que é um festival nos EUA, no Texas, havia um estande do Spotify lá e, para entrar como público, você precisava provar que tinha o aplicativo do Spotify no celular. O streaming não era ainda o modelo que é hoje. Então as coisas mudaram drasticamente. Acho que, sim, o TikTok mudou tudo de novo. A cada pouco surge um novo tipo de “disruptor” e as pessoas têm que acompanhar. A COVID foi um transformador, mudou a forma como as pessoas apresentam e divulgam música e como interagem com o público. E, sim, me sinto abençoado, muito sortudo de, nesses últimos 10 anos, ainda conseguir fazer isso. Ainda tenho uma grande base de fãs. Consigo fazer turnê agora mais do que nunca. Então, sou abençoado.


E: Também com sua música “Too Sweet”, acho que você conseguiu chamar a atenção de um novo público nas redes sociais. A música viralizou e muitas pessoas postaram sobre ela e a adoraram. Você acha que a canção ganhou uma vida própria? Você gosta de onde ela te levou?


H: Sim. Muitas músicas acabam ganhando uma vida própria. A forma como essa música viralizou no TikTok foi com aquela trend de glow up, tipo fotos de antes e depois, que não têm necessariamente nada a ver com o conteúdo da música. Na verdade, se você fosse o personagem da música, seria um glow down total. A voz ali é bem autodestrutiva. Mas isso mostra que as pessoas encontram o que amam em uma música e criam algo em cima disso. Isso é o legal do TikTok, acho. As pessoas estão em ato de criação quando interagem com sua música. Então, sim, ela tomou seu próprio rumo, ganhou uma vida própria. Encontrou um público que talvez nunca tivesse chegado até minha música. Então, sou abençoado. É ótimo.


E: Outra tendência das redes sociais que você talvez tenha visto é o “Hozier's Yell”. Você já ouviu falar disso?


H: Eu vi, sim sim. Na música do Noah Kahan, “Northern Attitude”. A música é linda. Mas sim, isso também foi incrível. Muito legal.


E: As pessoas estavam postando momentos icônicos da vida ou momentos em que se sentiram muito livres. E no fundo ouvimos você gritando. É bem legal, na verdade.


H: É, é bacana. E de novo, você nunca sabe. Acho que quando eu estava gravando aquele vocal, porque eu participei da música depois que ela já existia, já tinha sido lançada, e lembro de estar no estúdio em Nashville com o produtor e disse: “Olha, deixa eu tentar algo aqui e ver o que acontece”. Você faz algo no momento, por impulso, e as pessoas simplesmente se conectam com aquilo. Então, é legal.


E: Então foi algo bem espontâneo. Que legal!


H: Foi, sim, com certeza. Foi algo do dia mesmo, e depois se transformou no que se transformou, então é legal de assistir.


E: Legal. Falamos do seu último álbum, lançado em 2023. Você fez muitas turnês com esse álbum. E claro, seus fãs estão pensando: quando podemos esperar música nova? Pode nos contar um pouco do que você tem trabalhado? Talvez até um novo álbum?


H: Sim, tenho algumas coisas no bolso, digamos assim. Mas são basicamente fiapos, barbantes e botões soltos, sabe? Preciso organizar isso de uma forma que faça sentido. Tenho ideias para o próximo álbum, mas estou cheio de ideias e com pouco tempo, digamos assim. Preciso de tempo para me recuperar. Acho que quando eu sair da estrada, vou encontrar um buraco de uns dois metros, pular dentro e me enterrar um pouco, sabe? Só descansar. Vou me recolher por um tempo e encontrar energia e espaço mental para pensar no próximo disco. Mas estou animado com isso. Estou ansioso.


E: Qual seria o lugar dos seus sonhos para terminar esse álbum? Tipo uma cabana na floresta, algo assim?


H: Na verdade, comecei a juntar equipamentos para gravar mais em casa, em Wicklow. E Wicklow, para mim, é um lugar maravilhoso para se refugiar. É muito revigorante, renovador. É tranquilo, é no campo, é perto do mar. Então sou abençoado por estar onde estou. Quanto mais trabalho puder fazer lá, mais feliz vou ficar.


E: Mas hoje à noite você quer curtir o show com sua banda. Tem algum momento do set pelo qual você esteja especialmente ansioso hoje?


H: Sim. Eu adoro fazer turnê com essa banda. São músicos incríveis. Tem uma música chamada “Almost” em que passamos pela banda toda, cada um toca um solo, todos meio que se revezam, o que é muito divertido. E também adoro cantar todas as noites “Nina Cried Power” com a Amanda Brown. Ela é uma cantora maravilhosa. Então, eu amo essa banda, amo viajar com eles. Sou abençoado por estar em turnê com músicos incríveis e pessoas maravilhosas na banda e na equipe. Mas depois deste show, teremos alguns dias de descanso. Então esse é um show especial para nós, porque é o último da turnê europeia e todo mundo vai poder respirar depois. Estamos aproveitando. Também é o primeiro e único show na Alemanha este ano.

I: I'm really happy to speak to him today. He's a regular on our music playlist, on our music program. Also his last album was our album of the week on Ego FM. Great to have you on the show today, Hozier, hi!


H: Hi, how's it going?


I: I'm good. How are you? How have you been? I mean, it's been a busy summer for you, right?


H: Yeah, it's been busy. I've been traveling a lot this year and the last two years, you know, been kind of touring and promoting the album and thank you so much for all the support and yeah, making it album of the week. We really love the album.


I: You've played a lot of festival shows too. I think you've played in the US, you've played Reading and Leeds. You have a great show tonight at Superbloom Festival in Munich. Do you remember your last time you were in Munich?


H: We were only just trying to think about this on the drive in, trying to remember the last time. It was about a year and a half ago, but I cannot remember exactly the last time I was in Munich.


I: But it was great every time, right?


H: It is great every time. No, I love Bavaria. I love coming here. I came here when I was much younger to Bavaria when I was like 16 or something, before I started releasing music and I've loved it very much ever since. Yeah, so it's nice to be back and enjoy some of the local sights and food and drink and stuff.


I: Great to have you back. I have to ask, did you have coffee at the backstage here? How did you take your coffee?


H: I did have coffee today, but I'd be lying if I said I had a black. I did… I chose comfort. I chose peace today... On an empty stomach. It had milk in it, but I did have coffee today. Yeah.


I: That's all right. But of course, I was referring to your song ‘Too Sweet.’ We're going to talk about it. It's also been 10 years, this year marks 10 years since your debut album, Hozier. We've been listening ever since at Ego FM and also me personally, I'm a huge fan of your music. You've come a long way as an artist. I think you can be really proud of yourself. How has the music industry changed in all this time for you?


H: Oh, my God, the music industry has changed massively. Like, I'd say this to some people when we first played South by Southwest, which is a kind of a city festival in the States, you know, in Texas. When we first played, the Spotify installation that was there, you had to prove to gain entry as a concert goer. You had to prove that you had Spotify on your phone, like, streaming was not a model as it is now. So things have changed drastically. I suppose, yeah, like TikTok has changed everything again. There's like every few years is another kind of disruptor and people play catch up. And, you know, COVID was a disruptor and it changed the way people present and market music and engage with audiences. And yeah, so I feel blessed. I feel very fortunate that I've kind of in the last 10 years that I've still managed to do this. I still have a great fan base. I still manage to tour now more than ever before. 

So I'm blessed.


I: Also with your song "Too Sweet", I think you've like managed to get the attention of a whole new audience on social media, thanks to social media also. The song went viral and so many people posted about it and loved the song. Do you think it kind of developed a life of its own? Do you like where it's gotten you?


H: It did. Like a lot of songs kind of develop a life of their own. Even the way that that song went viral on TikTok was this kind of like glow up trend of like, you know, a before and an after photograph, which doesn't necessarily speak to the content of the song in any way, shape or form. In fact, if you were to be the character in that song or the voice in that song, it'd be a total glow down. You know what I mean? It's like a voice is quite a self-destructive one. But it just goes to show, yeah, people find what they love about a song and they make something. That's what's, I suppose, cool about TikTok. People are in an act of creation when they're engaging with your song. So yeah, it took on its own thing. It took on a life of its own. It found an audience that otherwise may not have come to my music. So I'm blessed, as I said. You know, it's kind of, it's great.


I: Another social media trend that you may or may not be aware of is the ‘Hozier Yell’. Have you heard about that one? I've seen it.


H: Yeah, yeah, yeah. On Noah Kahan's song, ‘Northern Attitude’. Beautiful track. But yeah, that was awesome too. That's really cool.


I: So people were posting like iconic moments in their life or moments where they felt really free. And then we hear in the background you yelling. And yeah, it's pretty great, actually. 


H: Yeah, it's cool. And again, it's like sometimes you just never know. I think when I was cutting that vocal, you know, I featured on that song, that song sort of exists, existed, you know, it had been released. And I remember just doing cutting the vocal in studio in Nashville with his producer. I was just like, look, just leave it on. Let me just try something here and see what happens. And you do something in a moment, like on a whim, and then people just connect with it. You know, so it's cool.


I: So it was a very spontaneous thing to do. Nice.


H: It was. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. On the day and then it becomes what it becomes, which is cool to watch.


I: Cool. We've talked about your last album, which was released in 2023. You've toured this album a lot. And of course, your fans are thinking about when can we expect new music? Can you tell us a bit about what you've been working on? Maybe even a new album?


H: Yeah, I mean, I've got sort of like stuff in my pockets, so to speak, you know, but it's mostly lint and string and loose buttons, you know, and so I have to put that together in a way that's meaningful. I've ideas for the next album. But I'm kind of big on ideas and short on time. I'll put it that way. So I need time to sort of recover. I think by the time I come off this road that I'll find a six foot hole somewhere, jump in for a little bit, you know, and bury myself, you know, and just take it easy. I'm going to go to ground like for a while and find time and energy and mental space to figure out the next record. But I'm excited for that. You know, I'm looking forward to it.


I: What would be like your dream place to go to to finish this album, like a cabin in the woods or something?


H: Well, I've actually started sort of collecting equipment so that I can record more at home in Wicklow. And Wicklow to me is just such a wonderful getaway. It's a wonderful place that's very recharging, very rejuvenative. It's quiet. It's countryside. It's near the sea. So I'm blessed where I am. So the more work I can do there, the happier I'll be.


I: But tonight you want to enjoy the concert with your live band. Is there a moment in the set or something you look forward to tonight especially?


H: Yeah, I am. I mean, I love touring with this band. They're such a wonderful group of musicians, you know. So there's a song called "Almost" where we pretty much go through the band. Everybody plays like a solo. Everybody's kind of just trading lines and playing solos, which is really, really fun. And I really enjoy every night singing "Nina Cried Power" with Amanda Brown. She's a wonderful, wonderful singer. So yeah, I love this band. I love touring with them. I'm blessed to be touring with some wonderful musicians and just wonderful people in both the band and the crew. But then after this show, we all have a few days of a break. So this is a sweet gig for us because it's our last European show and everybody will get a breather afterwards. And we're just enjoying it. You know what I mean? Good to come to a, again, first show, only show in Germany this year.


I: Wow, okay. So I wish you a great time on stage later. And thank you so much for taking the time today, Hozier.
